50. Tips for Using MSN TV Email

Here are just a few email tips that might help someone, especially newer users. The following subjects are covered:

1. How can I change my email name?

2. Why am I getting blank, or black emails from MSN and AOL email addresses?

3. What's a quick way to address email to another WebTV (or MSN TV) user.

4. How can I save an email "draft" for future editing without losing it?

How Can I Change My Email Name?

You can change the name that appears after your email address, but not the email address itself. To change the actual email address, you must delete that username and create a new username, which will cause you to lose all of the Favorites, Saved Email, and everything else associated with that username.

However, to change the name that appears after your email address, follow these steps.

1. Log on to your Primary username (the one that has the WebTV account).

2. From the Home screen, click on Settings.

3. On the next screen, click on Extra users.

4. Next screen, click on the email address for which you wish to change the name.

5. Next screen, on the left, you will see two entries; one for First name and one for Last name. Click on the name shown as First name. (If no name has ever been entered, the word None will appear.)

6. Next screen, you will be shown two boxes into which you can type whatever "name" you wish to show on your email. You have to use two names. Just a first name won't work. Note: You don't have to use your real name. Also, if you are bothered by having to use both a first and last name, you can go ahead and enter them, and then call 1-800-GOWEBTV and ask to have the second name removed.

7. After making your entry, click on Continue.

8. On the next screen, be sure to click Done.

At this point, you may choose to change more names of other users, or just click Done to finish!

Why Am I Getting Blank, or Black Emails From MSN and AOL Email Addresses?

You may have recently been getting blank looking emails from computer friends who have msn.com and aol.com email addresses. If so, it probably means that they have downloaded the newer MSN 8 or MSN.9 programs. So why are their emails so dark?

For email from MSN users, the problem is partly due to MSN and partly due to your friend who is using these newer programs. It's partly MSN's fault for using a default setting that is not compatible with our email program, and partly your friend's fault for not changing it. Same is true for AOL email, and if you scroll down a bit, you can find the "fix" for AOL folks to use.

~The MSN Email Fix~

Mail these instructions to your friend, and tell him/her to follow them exactly and all should be well.. These instructions are for YOUR FRIEND to follow.. NOT YOU!

--------------------
1. Log in to MSN 8 or 9

2. Click onto "Mail and More"

3. Click onto "Email settings" on the left sidebar

4. Click onto "Writing email (2nd choice on screen)

5. Click "Text formatting" (4th choice)

6. Note that it says, "Default setting is 'Use HTML for rich text formatting."

7. Click "Use plain text for compatibility with any email program."

8. Click "Save changes" at the bottom right of the screen.
--------------------

This should clear up the problem. It did on my computer, which is running the newer MSN-9 program.

~The AOL Email Fix~

(Thanks to Barbie for doing the groundwork on this one!)

1. With the arrow on the write screen, the computer user should RIGHT CLICK the mouse and look for "Compose as Plaintext" at the bottom. Click that and compose the e-mail. It should will be readable when it arrives in our WebTV inbox.

OR:

2. There is a tab that says "EXTRAS" above the write screen. This tab puts a BACKGROUND on the e-mail when it is sent and makes it readable. Click on it and make a selection from the list of light blue, white, yellow, tan, etc.

Barbie's two daughters used the #1 "fix" above and it works great. Their emails come through and look the same as ours.

What's a Quick Way to Address Email to Another WebTV (or MSN TV) User?

Of course, probably the easiest way to address an email is to click on the word To: and retrieve the address list and choose the name from there. But sometimes you might want to type it out, for whatever reason. To do so, you do not have to use the ending part which reads @webtv.net, as long as they are a WebTV user!

Just type in the first part of the email address, or username, and our email system will automatically add @webtv.net to the address as it is sent!

How can I save an email "draft" for future editing without losing it?

To "hold" a message so that it can later be edited, address it to:

abc@webtv/.net

The important part is to include the forward slash after webtv and before the dot net. Its location must be exactly as shown above!

Almost instantly, you will get a "Mail Delivery Failure" notice from our WebTV postmaster, which will say the following:

From: MAILER-DAEMON@webtv.net(Mail Delivery System)

Date: Wed, May 26, 2004, 9:07am (CDT-2)
To: YourName@webtv.net

Subject: Delivery failure: Returned to Sender

Mail Delivery Notification
A message you sent earlier with the subject "quick return?" has been returned to you because it could not be delivered to all of the intended recipients. Here is what the remote mail system said the problem was:

[abc@webtv/.net]: bad address syntax: "abc@webtv/.net"

If you want to correct the addresses and resend your message, select the Edit Message button below. To see the complete delivery rejection notice, select the Show Details button.

The email can sit in your inbox for days or even months. When you want to edit the message (add to it, or whatever), just click on the "Edit Message" button in the message and make your changes or additions. If you are still not finished, simply resend the email again, using the same incorrect address. This process can be repeated indefinitely.

When your final draft is complete, just erase abc@webtv/.net and insert the correct addy!
