57. Can't Use Instant Messenger? Here's Help!

Over the last few months, a problem has developed which has prevented some WebTV users from being able to use Instant Messenger.

Here's what the problem is:

If the username which is trying to access IM was not using both a first AND last name when you signed up for .Net Passport, then IM will continue to be unavailable for that username. Likewise, if you originally signed up for .Net Passport using just a first name, you must now re-register with .Net Passport using two names!

What has to be done is for that username to re-register with .Net Passport. BUT.. before you can do that, you MUST insert both a first and last name for that particular email address. This is done from the Primary user's account. Log in as the Primary user, choose Settings, and then click on Extra Users.

Next, click on the username which is having problems accessing IM. From there, you can insert (type) a first and last name for that user.

Next, switch users and log onto the username which you just changed.

From the Home screen, choose Settings, and then choose Microsoft Passport.

If you can't remember your .Net Passport password, there will be a link for you to change it. But whatever it takes, you need to log in to .Net Passport. Once you have done that, you will be "led" through a series of steps to get IM working. It will be the exact same set of steps that you initially went through when you first signed up for .Net Passport and Instant Messenger.

You MUST use a first and last name in the .Net Passport section, too!

After you go thru the "sign-in" process for IM, you should be ready to go!

If it is your Primary user which is giving you IM troubles, then you can now go BACK into Settings on the Primary user and erase the last name. If it is a secondary username, you will have to call 1-800-GOWEBTV (1-800-469-3288) and ask a WebTV Customer Service Rep to remove the last name for you.
