10. How Much is 3 Megs? (Page Builder Limit)

The question often arises, "How much room (storage capacity) do I have in my PageBuilder area?"

The following is a direct quote from Paul Erickson which was posted to the webtv.users newsgroup on July 8, 1999. It is used here with his permission. (Thank you, Paul ....again!)

"It depends. If you want a lot of graphics and music, you can use 3 megs up fairly quickly. An "average" animated GIF is around 20k, and a little over 50 of those makes a megabyte, so 160 or so would equal 3 megs.

MIDIs tend to be around the same size, but some are longer, so say 100 MIDis would be 3 megs. [Midis cannot be placed on a WebTV website.]

JPEGs are larger still, let's say a video capture from a Plus is around 80k; around 40 of those would make 3 megs.

WAVs are even bigger, so a 30-second audio capture from a Plus would be around 200k, and 17 or so would be 3 megs...but you can't add WAVs to Page Builder pages directly, only images can be put in the Scrapbook.

If your pages are mostly text, then 3 megs is a huge amount of space. My entire website at ericpaul.net is less than 2 megabytes."

[end quote]

To elaborate even further on the subject, here are some of my own statistics regarding Scrapbook and PageBuilder...
I have 55 images in my Scrapbook. I have 95 webpages. Many of those scrapbook images are being used in many of those webpages. By going to my PageBuilder Index and clicking on "Cleanup", here's what my 'cleanup' looks like:

"Your documents are consuming 18% of your storage. (Your scrapbook is consuming 47% of your storage.)"

So, I am only using 65 percent of my total allowed space of 3 megabytes (18+47). This should give you an idea of how many images can safely be stored in your scrapbook and how much text can be used in the PageBuilder webpages. But remember that images vary in size, so it would take fewer "large" images to fill up your storage to capacity!

Please keep in mind that the 3 megabyte limit is based on each username. With a total of six possible usernames, your PageBuilder limit is actually expanded to 18 megabytes of space!
