27. Why Won't My Red Message Light Go Off?

Has this ever happened to you?

Your red message light is ON, but you seem to have read all of your messages. You may have messages in your E-mail Inbox, but you have read them. You know this because none of them are still brightly highlighted.

There can be several reasons your red light may stay on

It can because you have unread messages in either your Saved or Discard Folders.

If this is the case, go to your Discarded email folder and choose Clean up from the left sidebar. Then choose Mark all and then Discard to permanently discard all those emails.

Next, go to your Saved folder and open any unread messages. These two steps can usually alleviate the "light on" problem.

The red light can stay on if you are logged on with a Hotmail or MSN address which you have installed as one of your MSN.TV usernames. If this is the case, you can usually re-visit your inbox after opening all emails, and the light will then go off.

Another possibility is that there are unread messages on another username, either in the in-box, or in the Saved or Discarded Folders!

To find out if this is your problem, spend a few minutes logging on to each of your usernames, and check your Saved and Discarded folders for unread messages. Open any unread Saved messages, and permanently delete any unread Discarded messages.

Finally, there appear to be glitches on some of the MSN.TV servers which can cause your red light to remain lit. There is generally nothing you can do to alleviate this issue. However, if you are viewing your inbox and it appears that there are no unread messages, you can use a Power Reload to either reveal any unread messages or to cause the red light to go off. To do a Power Reload, hold down your CMD key and then tap the letter R several times.

These are all of the reasons of which I am aware that can cause the red message light to remain on. If you have any different ideas or tips as to why this can occur, please feel free to email me by following this link:
