29. Height and Width "How To's"

~Hints for WebTV Signatures~

When including images and sounds in your email or posts, proper coding of the html commands will give you much better results than simply including the codes for the locations of the sounds and/or images.

If you've ever clicked onto a post or an email which takes forever to load, then you know what I mean. Here are some hints for making your posts or emails load much faster.

1. Height & Width Attributes

By including height and width values, you tell the viewer's browser how to display the page. This allows the text of the message or webpage to be displayed, while the images are being retrieved for viewing.

Here's how to find height and width values!

Go to the image you wish to use. Make sure that nothing else is on the screen except for that image. (In other words, be sure you are viewing the image only, and not just the page where the image is located.) Then, go directly to

Anthony's Height and Width Finder

When you take the URL of the image to the above site, you will be given the correct height and width attributes, along with the complete code needed to place your image into a sig box or web page!

2. Don't Autostart Music

There are many reasons to make your audio attachments into clickable links rather than have them "autostart." One of the biggest reasons is that many, if not most, computer users cannot even read the text of your email if music is embedded into your sig box. Your music is really an attachment, and some computers may even crash when trying to autostart music.

Additionally, many WebTV users still have the Classic units, which will not play Real Audio attachments. In fact, you may cause their unit to freeze, and the recipient may have to "power off" to "unlock" their unit.

Another reason to refrain from musical "embeds" is this. Many users surf in silence, perhaps because another family member is sleeping. Your embedded music may come as quite a shock to them! Give the viewer a chance to click on to your music, rather than forcing them to listen.

How to make a music source clickable

Making a sound source clickable is just like any other link. Here's a code you can use.

<html><a href="URL of sound source">Click Here to Play Music</a></html>

Following these tips will make your emails, posts, and web pages more enjoyable for all to view!
