Scrapbook Lockup

If it hasn't happened to your before, there's a good chance it will at some point.

You receive a really neat picture in an email, and decide that you just have to have it in your own WebTV PageBuilder Scrapbook. So, you choose "Scrapbook" from the left sidebar of the email screen, and add the image to your scrapbook.

The next thing you know, you're visiting your scrapbook, and you come across a screen which will just not load. You can't even see the image(s)! Your yellow light just flashes and flashes, but no pictures from that scrapbook page will appear.

You are experiencing "Scrapbook Lockout," also called "Scrapbook Lockup."

The first part of this article will deal with "fixing" your Scrapbook. The second part will help you avoid this pitfall in the future.

---------------

The Cure

The "cure" has it's drawbacks. To effect the cure, you are going to necessarily lose any other Scrapbook images from that one screen of images. You will not lose all of your Scrapbook images!

Before I begin, let me make this one very important note:

The cure will involve deleting all of the images on that one particular Scrapbook page, or screen. If any of the other images on that screen are currently being used in a PageBuilder website, you will first have to delete those images from the webpage, before you can delete them from your Scrapbook.

(That may prove to be a tricky proposition, since you are unable to view them in your Scrapbook. It will take some "deduction" on your part to determine which images must be deleted from webpages before beginning to delete them from your Scrapbook.)

Here's how to delete the "too large," offending image from Scrapbook.

Go to PageBuilder, and choose Scrapbook.

Begin to go through the "pages" of your Scrapbook until you come to the page which is "locked up."

Once there, choose Clean Up from the left-hand sidebar.

Next, choose Mark All, also on the sidebar.

Finally, choose Discard from the sidebar.

This will eliminate the offending image, plus any other images on that one page. It will not delete all of your Scrapbook images.

If, on the other hand, your unit shuts down every time you try to access that scrapbook page, you need to call 1-800-GOWEBTV. (1-800-469-3288)

Ask for TECH SUPPORT and explain that you have uploaded a "corrupt image file" to your scrapbook. Tell them the NUMBER of the scrapbook page and ask them to delete the entire page of images. If they don't seem to know what you're talking about, or how to fix it, ask for a ticket number and try calling again later. You'll get a different "tech" each time you call. Sooner or later, you'll get someone who is knowledgeable enough to help!

If you have several failed attempts after calling TECH SUPPORT, then try asking for a PRODUCT SPECIALIST. Give them the same information (that you have uploaded a corrupt image file to your scrapbook and wish to have that entire scrapbook page removed. Be SURE that you know the NUMBER of that scrapbook page when you call.)

My sincere thanks to "Fireman Jim" and others for suggesting these cures!

The Prevention

Maintain your Scrapbook in a "Protective Status"

To prevent the loss of images you do not want to lose by using the Clean Up and Delete All method, keep the highest numerical ScrapBook Page filled up with 6 items in it. This will cause any lockup due to a large, "unacceptable image" to occur in the next higher, "EMPTY" Scrapbook Page.

You can do this by using small, "filler" images!

Later when you want to upload a "wanted" image to your next higher scrapbook page, you may delete one of the small "filler" gifs from the previous page, and the "wanted" image will drop down and replace it, making that page full again and the next one Empty again.

As long as you maintain the last page of your Scrapbook by keeping it full with six images per page, you will always have an empty next page to which you can upload new images!

Here's a small, "filler" image you can use. It's just a football, and will use only a very small percentage of your Scrapbook.

Click on the above URL, and then press your Go To key, and choose Show Current. Hold down the CMD key and press the letter A to highlight the URL. Next, holding down the CMD key, press the letter C to copy the URL.

Then, press your Back key to return to this page.

Next, click on my uploader at:

uploader.html

When you reach the uploader, paste the URL into the empty box by holding down the CMD key and pressing the letter V. Then, press your Return key. A popup box will inform you that you are about to add an image to your Scrapbook. Click on Continue and you will be transported to your Scrapbook, where you can view the image which you just placed there.

You may keep adding that image repeatedly until you fill up your Scrapbook page with six images. You will then be in the Protective Status!

Here are some general "rules of thumb" to avoid problems in the future.

Before "uploading" an image from your email into your Scrapbook, you can get a basic idea of its size. While viewing your list of incoming email, click onto Clean Up on the left-hand sidebar. You will then be able to view the Subject line(s) of all the emails in your inbox. Over to the right of each email, you will notice a percentage amount.

If the email containing the image is 3% or lower, you can feel safe about uploading the picture into your Scrapbook.

Anything in the 4% to 5% range is probably still safe, but may be "slow loading."

A reading of 6% is approaching the limits of Scrapbook.

Any figure of 7% or larger should NOT be loaded into your Scrapbook.

An email with hundreds of "forwarded" email addresses may show an erroneously high percentage, so it's entirely possible that an email of 12% may contain a safely-sized image! In cases like this, common sense and practiced judgement must be used.

Here's a helpful hint! If you are unsure whether to upload an image or not, for fear of "jamming up" your Scrapbook, consider forwarding the email with the image to another, less-used username. You have the option of having up to 6 usernames. Send that large image to one of your less important usernames and attempt to upload the image into that Scrapbook. If it successfully loads, it should also work on any other username, as long as there is still room in the Scrapbook.

It is my hope that these tips and suggestions will allow you to truly enjoy using your WebTV Scrapbook!

Thanks once again to Fireman Jim for providing me with his expertise and knowledge of using images. Without his help, this article would not have been possible!
